So in this morning when I checked facebook, got notification requesting me to support free basics with such an emotional message pasted below
"To the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, I support digital equality for India. Free Basics provides free access to essential internet services like communication, education, healthcare, employment, farming and more. It helps those who can't afford to pay for data, or who need a little help getting started online. And it’s open to all people, developers and mobile operators. With 1 billion Indian people not yet connected, shutting down Free Basics would hurt our country's most vulnerable people. I support Free Basics – and digital equality for India. Thank you."
And to my surprize people are joining this without realizing it how harmful it can be in future.

what you want to say? Should we support it or not?
And how will it harmful for us?

so what if realince is giving few sites to browse free? Is not it good people will have access those site without paying money? And those who want to visit full web, just recharge with a internet pack.

Your post is the reason why Facebook has this campaign running. People are being told a very small point of view that sounds lovely. Larger picture is missing. And of course most people don't care. Which is why it's so dangerous and works in their favor.

Selective access to the Internet is not a healthy thing. Even at zero charges.

what i know is with this they can manipulate their ads better and made people to see what they want to show them but i do not think that they can stop people from browsing outside it when people gonna have access to high speed internet in near future. India will be digital in 4-5 years.

Good luck with that thinking. Most of India doesn't have access to clean water. You can think India would get cheap high speed Internet in five years.

^^^ Most of villages in my state indeed have water shortage, but most kids in those villages have Internet "pyack" in their mobiles 😀
Water is provided by govt, while internet is provided by private mobile operators, so internet is perhaps more readily available...

If Government is really concerned about making India digital, the first step to be taken should be to increase post FUP speed to at least 2Mbps.512Mbps on broadband is enough for browsing but think from point of view of a cellular data user they get 40kbps to max 80kbps post FUP. its perfect example of "नंगा नहाये क्या निचोड़े क्या".
Coming to free basic discussion this selective free browsing is a bad thing today RCom and Fb has joined hands tomorrow may be airtel joints hands with other. so what will happen a Rcom user will always prefer to browse only those sites which are offered free to him. Also speed throttling is a common issue for all broadband user so you think these telcos won't follow that thing?

yes internet growth is rapidly increasing in india. daily a new ISP come with cheaper and better plan.
India’s internet user base 354 million, registers 17% growth in first 6 months of 2015: IAMAI report

And about FUP. Internet is not all mean to increase FUP. Those who use internet for Entertainment. Downloading illegal movies, games and other stuff are more concerned about FUP. And now its time to deploy FTTH and with FTTH we can except better bandwidth.

you get basic access to the internet which means access to select partner sites that joins the program. rival companies are unlikely to join or get equal treatment. things are bad today with whatsapp and facebook monopoly in the messaging and social markets. just imagine similar monopolies in other segments. bigger players would be able to get exclusive access to a large segment of the market by joining the program while smaller players would struggle to emerge without the same advantage and blah blah.

free basics has reportedly removed a few issues that analysts/experts/etc. had originally reported. i have not given much thought about it. facebook has massive trust issues and as a owner of a struggling web platform which also gets affected by this program... i cannot support it 😀

please tell a new isp that has emerged in the last six months with cheaper plans than established players in rural segment of the indian market. hell even name one that provide services in the urban segment.

There are so many isp. They just don't have service on national level. That's why we are unaware about them. They operate locally. In gurgaon, is not there nextra and you broadband provide service with FTTH? Or siti cable too and also railwire. All are FTTH provider and have cheaper plans.

all of these tiny operators are only focused on profitable areas like new emerging societies where they can signup an exclusive deal to provide internet services. no one is laying down fiber in existing areas with multiple operators. forget villages.
