Since the last couple of days, my MTNL connection has been cursed with slow browsing, not very slow but it's slower than what I expect. I replaced their modem with a TP-Link modem+router, but nothing has changed. I've been testing the connection regularly using pings. The exchange tells me there's no server problem from their end, but if that's true and there's some other reason like wiring or something at my end, then how can I get varying ping levels?

In the morning, I had excellent ping times for 8.8.8.8 and my local MTNL DNS, but right now (evening), it's terrible. Even after re-starting the modem, it has hardly improved. Can someone explain what the problem really is? Here are the two screenshots:

Which port?? IP address? Are you sure nothing was getting downloaded in the background?

From your DNS it looks like your on Ericsson..... Ericsson has these problems on certain IP ranges......

Post your router Status page too.....

I'm not tech savvy, but I assume port = wifi port on my router. IP address begins with 120.61. And no, nothing was being downloaded in the background. Infact, this is a regular thing and not a one-time observation. It's happening again since past 2 hours, 8.8.8.8 pings have gone up from 10-11ms to very unsteady numbers and request timed outs.

What's Ericsson? I even connected via LAN to figure out if it's just a WIFI problem, but no, the same issue on the LAN. The internet is working fine (no disconnects, videos load completely), but I can notice those intermittent speed decreases and slightly slow browsing frequently, which is very annoying and I don't want it to happen. What should I tell the MTNL guys? They say "they checked at their end and there's no issue" but are they lying?

Here's the router status page:

Dont bother about ports now...... you are probably on SOTL... which is very good.... but ignore it for now...

Whats ur plan and speeds?

From the router status page it looks like a 4Mbps plan....... so the downstream Data Rate is OK...... but Upstream Data Rate is too low @253kbps....... which should actually be 1024kbps.....

So say when some application like Dropbox..... starts to upload and sync its data...... it will use the full upload bandwidth and will increase ping drastically and reduce download speeds.......

Check out what speeds you should get from your plan....... match it to the Data Rate shown in Status page..... if the numbers are off...... then call 12540 or your exchange and get the right speed profile set....

I have a "2Mbps upto 16 GB plan" but I crossed that mid-month itself so right now, I only get 1Mbps. I catch download speeds of ~100KB/s mostly which is fine for 1 Mbps obviously, but there are intermittent fluctuation periods throughout the day when it will wander around 40-50KB/s. That time, the pings in cmd are also out of line. I'll call them and ask them how to change the DataRate download speed in the router profile, but I'm not sure if that'd help. Because if that was the problem, this issue would happen 24/7 right?

Look at how nice my line is acting right now

Sorry for the 5 year old bump...
I recently got 86 packets Ping of Death on MTNL.
72020-11-22 19:23:01FirewallWARNINGDetected Ping of Death attack. Dropped 82 packets.
82020-11-22 19:22:56FirewallWARNINGDetected Ping of Death attack. Dropped 86 packets.
Till now max I saw was 3 packets. Is this a targeted attack?
Can you guys show your logs for the POD.
