Always backup drivers and ssettings in general before formatting. Also did you format because of some problem? If you could say what it was it would be helpful.

It is always advisable to format hdd in 2 months. even if u have torjons spywares they are washed away.... 😉 But dont forget to back up the data. The best thing is to have 2 partition. the c drive should be for OS and d for the backed up data. But do all things with proper precautions and only if u understand formating and have original os disk or cd. U guys can also try some linux distros like ubuntu .. the best available os for 587 MB ISO download.

i believe it depends upon person to person. my windows here is running perfectly fine after 2 years of installation and heavy usage of more than 10 hours almost everyday and tons of software testing and other experiment. the key lies with how you use it and how you maintain it. xp has really impressed me, if i have to install something else next, it would be the media center edition. linux is still quite crude for people who need an all round solution...

All the times I have heard of someone formatting their hard disk it was because of some problem which could not be fixed. No such thing has happened to me ever. I formatted my hard disks once to partition them and that's it, don't remember for how many years it's been working properly.I like XP and would not get rid of it but I would really like to get a version of Linux that recognizes my LAN card 🙁 I downloaded several gegabytes of almost every live cd out there to see if it would detect it but none of them worked.

no idea why dudes format their hard drives when just deleting the windows folder is enough to get a fresh copy of the OS installed.

Sometimes not even that is necessary. Once I installed win98 over a previously installed one which had no problems 😛h34r: btw that is not recommended.

that is a damn risky step to take my friend. especially if you have installed updates over the older windows 😉

Formatting one's hard disk is rarely a necessity, however, many a times it happens, particularly in the case of windows, in which the functionality of the OS is so complex, that one cannot understand what exactly goes wrong, and one has to reformat. The best bet, as said, is to keep your personal files, settings etc on a different partition. I have all my settings, downloads etc on a seperate /home partition. So if I ever have to format any of my linux distro's, I get all the settings, customisations, tweaks for all my applications back 😀
