Brought a eveready 7w led before reading its high lumen per watt rating but now read that its power factor is 0.5 which means it consume 14w means i saved just 1w compared to cfl bulb and still paid more than double the price. wtf eveready.
no star ratings for led by our govt.(sleeping)

you can read more about power factor here Top 11 Indian Branded LED Bulbs compared | LED lights in India

I am about to change all cfl in house with led (30+) bulb so need to keep a few spare one in house.
Anyone here got noticed power bill savings by changing whole house lights with led?

Buying company Philips, Everready etc LED bulb is very expensive. Sometime back i thought of buying LED bulbs. So i went and checked local shops. I was not impressed by brightness of light and the cost.

So i went to Bhagirath Place (Biggest wholesale Market of electrical goods). I found Chinese LED bulbs at 10 times lower prices. I actually needed more light so i bought a 12W and 9W. Originally i was thinking of 7W. But 7W light is very poor.

I paid 80 Rs for 12W and 70 Rs for 9W. Using Bulbs since last 4 months and faced no problem at all. This Diwali i am going to Bhagirath Place to Buy a pack of 10 LED bulbs. I would replace all my CFLs and ordinary Bulbs. But remember that LED Bulbs are no match to conventional Tubelights in terms of brightness. So if you need light for reading, i suggest keeping a Tubelight in Room.

After i realized LED Bulbs are so cheap. I never gonna buy CFL again. And i would never waste my money on company LED Bulbs which i think are extremely overpriced.

Apart from that, you can find all kinds of modern decorative LED lighting at Bhagirath Place at good prices. When i renovate my home, i will also buy it specially roof fitting designs.

But what about power factor? Also most Chinese unbranded products have overstated rating n specifications, don't expect it to save much powet for you.
Obviously better than cfl anyday but still.
7w Led bulb with pf factor of. 5 in actual consume 14w electricity so hardly better than 15w cfl as claimed. This was for previous batch of eveready lights.
Think about chinese led lights, can't even judge.

Can't comment on the authenticity of ratings. But CFL is worse than LED in many aspects not just power. CFL has lower life, breaking risk, sensitive to voltage fluctuations, ultraviolet radiation etc. LED better in all these aspects.

I don't have problem with Chinese lights. Everything is made in China these days. Only some products get assembled in India while their key parts are manufactured in China.

All the big companies invest a lot in marketing and Ads. Everready has to pay Akshay Kumar a lot of Bucks for TV Ads. They add cost of that in their products. You can buy Company LED Bulbs. One advantage is that you will get warranty. There is no warranty on unbranded Chinese Bulbs.

But remember, 7W and 9W have very little luminescence. If you want good light, buy 12W or higher.

Does power factor matter in the Indian context?

We are still billed on active power (watts) and not apparent power (volt-amperes), AFAIK.

lol now thats a new explanation of power factor, from what I have read it meant each led bulb has to consume more power for rated luminance.

There is a power factor. But AFAIK the final rating of Bulb is made keeping it in factor. So a Rated 14W bulb means 14W. You don't have to multiply by a factor to know real rating.

For electricity billing, power factor does not really matter. Two 12W LED are same.
But low PF LED draws more current. High PF LED draws less current.

The current requirement can be helpful in the circuit design - how many LED bulbs you can install on the same wiring, whether the wire has capacity for all the added current, can the source supply enough current etc.

What about Eveready 7w leds. The one I have has pf of 0.5 while the current one in market has pf of 0.9 . What will be the actual consumption of power(in context of electricity usage) of both?
I mean for end user its electricity bill that matters, are both the led same on actual bill if used for same no of hours in a month.

The link given in first post of this thread suggest same or I am not getting it wrong ?

Update: Got 8bulbs at Rs. 93 each from local bses office.
7w
pf>. 9
600 lumen
not a bad deal.
brand: surya

No, power factor has no bearing on the wattage.

A poor power factor bulb will require more apparent power (active + reactive) and therefore draw more current yo provide same wattage as a bulb with good power factor.

What we are billed on is the wattage, which stays the same irrespective of power factor.

You will be charged the same if you use pf of 0.5 or 0.9

Small electric products like LED Bulbs have no effect on drawing of current. You have to worry about big appliances when it comes to power factor. Geysers, Motors, ACs having low power factor which draw significant current can put too much load on your house wiring.

Bulbs draw too little current. So no problem with that. Just see power rating and Lumins when buying LED bulb.
