Bata has now added an opt-out option in their texts!

Then why do you give them your number? what do you expect? Free Bata Shoes? 😀
Last year when i went to pantaloons and they kept on asking for my number but i refused or fill up their form for some gay ass discount coupon for next time. They said number is mandatory but I said NO NUMBER. even if i am forced to give my number for some reason i give them a fake one. 🙂

the whole point we are raising this issue is to highlight dick companies. not to highlight who is smart and who is not.

they are all dick companies. In 2015 it should be no secret that you should not be handing out your mobile and email to any of those.
It is not about being smart. In 2015 this should be expected behavior.

you need to give your actual number to some companies to get proper support and updates. your mediclaim company for example?
what we need is government policy forcing these companies to provide a proper feature where you can manage your subscriptions.
i am not a fan of workarounds. i prefer to push for actual solutions. though i am currently thinking of someone who has annoyed me enough so that i can use his number for placing orders at these services.

Insurance and other few companies are exceptions. You have to give them your number but I cant understand whats the need to give your number to Bata or pantaloons?

yeah we all wish that Gov will come up with some kind of policy to make these companies behave but i doubt that is going to happen. Ever. 🙁

what? Did i say anything wrong?
I just said i dont think gov will ever make such a policy. If consumers are so helpless even in the west then i have very little hope from the Indian Government.

What are you going to do if someone start giving your mobile number on these outlets? This thing is totally out of your control. Anyone can give your mobile number on these counters and you are going to get spam from these brands. Sure prevention is better than cure... But this is part of a bigger problem that needs to be discussed and brands indulging in it should be criticized.

If someone is intentionally giving my numbers again and again then i guess that would fall under harassment but one time incident should not be a big deal but yes that would surely piss me off.

And yes I agree with you that there should be a policy to stop such practices But as i said i doubt Indian Gov will ever make one. And never did i ever say that we should not be naming and shaming such companies in any way we can. I just said there is no need to give your number to test if they will give you an opt-out option in the email or SMS. We are all educated people here i guess and know very well that how giving them your number will result in SPAMs.

I am not trying to win any arguments. Just sharing my opinions.

what about a situation where you buy a pair of pants at pantaloons. but there needs to be some modifications done on the pants. and they say they would call you after doing those modifications? what are you going to do? leave a fake number?

duh. I rarely keep my bills with me so I had to give them my number incase I wanted any refund/exchange in future. Btw aren't the companies responsible to not spam you incase you trusted them with your number?
