🤔 Hey all good souls aboard this forum -- many thanks for sharing so many useful trips (and traps to avoid) for DataOne !I have been using this BB connection right from the launch (@ central kolkata) and my experiences have been fairly Ok with occasional hiccups...I have 2 queries open for the helping Junta :1. I have the UT-300R modem supplied by BSNL and now I wish to connect a wireless router to use with my IBM Thinkpad T41 runs on WinXP SP1-- which is the best buy available in the local market (brand/price etc..) and what are the extra settings that requires to be configured ? My laptop is WiFi enabled (802.11) and also I have a PCMCIA card that I can use.2. I am currently using the WinXP dial-up connection for PPoE...and also when I started using the modem I didn't configure anything on it (by connecting using "admin" etc..)..no issues with connection, speed seems to be good too...should you think I need to do anything to enhance performance?Awaiting your expert comments and advice 😀

Welcome to forum,1. Let's see whether I can suggest u any modelno. , plz be patient.2. Modem->Wi Fi Router->PCYou have to configure the modem from the web management interface if you want to use the above configuration...[192.168.1.1]

TunkaiI use a Linksys Wifi Router which like is being used by me since I got my Dataone connection which has been since the month of launch. I too am from Kolkata like you.I think in India you can buy the Wifi Router sold by D-Link which would cost Rs 5500-6500 or so. The same think of Linksys in USA or HongKong is available for about Rs 2500.All you do is install the Router ( takes 2 -3 minutes ) and then switch and use streaming continuous Wifi connectivity all over your house on your lap top. You can also connect further PCs thru the Ports on the Router ( usually 4 Ports ). You can made additional Ports by linking Port 1 to a Swtich and get the Additional Ports of the Switch at your disposal.I doubt if the thing is complicated. Be withou fear and go for it and enjoy the Wifi atmosphere in your set up. Its fun to be on Wifi as you are cordless/wireless/cableless.No further settings are required so I can asure you that you can relax.

🙄

Thanks buddy....

Do you get the LinkSys router @ Kolkata too ? also, what's your experience with the WiFi ? is the signal consistent and strong all over the house ? is there a preferrable radius of influence where I need to move around ?

🙄 Thanks...will be patient 😀 for my 2nd question >> you mean right now I don't need to touch the default settings ? but when I plan to add a wifi router, I need to change the settings in the modem via 192.168.1.1 ?

Ill answer ur 2nd question again - YOU DO NOT NEED TO CHANGE ANY SETTING ON THE MODEM.Once the comp is set to the Cat 5 and is running then save the Icon for that on the Desktop. As soon as the Wifi is set up then the same Icon will permit you to connect thru wifi also. SO you do not need 2 icons. The signal keeps hovering from Excellent to Very Good and then Good to Weak. Sometimes even if a hand covers the Wifi area on the Laptop and signal gets weak but thats fine.Distance is limited on the Wifi units and we shud try to keep the Wifi Router in the most central position of the house so that we get max radius covered under it.Linksys is not available in India officially. I am not sure if its better than D-Link or not but my experience with it is good. I and my freinds all use the same and all our 5 machines work fine ( I use 2 of them - one at home and another at office ). We were reco the Linksys by my cousin who was VP at Mphasis in USA as he uses the same. I had every reason to trust his judgement.

U need to configure from 192.168.1.1 if u plan to access net from multiple PCs.For a single PC, the dialer works fine.

My multiple PCs work without configuring 192.168.1.1. I dont really think much settings are required if one uses a Router.

This is the same equipment I mentioned though I dint give the model no. I think price is in the range of 5500-6500 Incl of VAT. The equivalent of the same is available abroad for 2500 of Linksys while inferior cos stuff can be got for 800-1600. I prefer Linksys to others as my experience has been good.

DI-714P+ is another model which seems interesting from the D-Link stable besides a few more there on store. This would require a deeper study than I presumed while choosing a DSL Router which is Wifi enabled.

What is the difference between a normal modem and the one I am going to get with dataone internet?

Friends,The DI-714P+ does not integrate an ADSL modem ! Has a print server, but I don't know if it can be put to any use by home users !It's better to go for the G604T as it integrates ADSL modem+4port switch+wi-fi router. Single package, no mess. Just surrender the utstar modem and relax! 😀Joe,U are going to get an ADSL Modem+Router with DataOne. [Utstar/Huwaei] 🙂

O yeah, ur right, the modem suggested by you has a Modem built in inside it so we need not buy the modem from the BSNL guys if we got for this wireless router cum modem suggested by you.Excellent observation there.

i have huwai modem (MT800)and smc wireless router and smc usb network adapter. its working fine. some times after some inactivity in network the connection drops off. i tried all settings, no luck. can you suggest what may be the problem.
