Today I got Airtel's 4G U-Sim delivered by post. I activated the new sim by following the instructions. It activated successfully. But it just says 3G on my iPhone 5S.

Now my iPhone 5S is A1530 model. It fully support's Airtel's 2300 Mhz Band 40. Specs here.

I called up Airtel helpline and they asked to go to Airtel Gallery in Mumbai. I went there and the guys were clueless. They asked me to call CC again. Upon calling, the CC guy tells me that my iPhone is NOT COMPATIBLE with Airtel's Band 40 LTE. He says Airtel has deployed LTE on BAND 4 in Mumbai due to govt regulations. I think it is false.
Band 4 is 1700 Mhz FDD LTE which is reserved for North America so far. The call got disconnected.

Tried calling again. Another guy said the same thing. Airtel LTE Mumbai is on Band 4 2300 Mhz. I told him it's Band 40 and not Band 4. But he got angry and hung up on me. Now what to do?

I don't think any telco in India has LTE band 4 spectrum as on today. Airtel CC is probably clueless. They should be on either 1800 MHz or 2300 MHz.

Have you checked the settings in iPhone where you have to select between 2G, 3G, LTE?

In iPhone 6, its in Settings > Cellular > Voice & data menu.

And i don't know why people are in such a mad rush to get 4G? The data plans suck, speed in unreliable, coverage is limited, no clarity on future roll out.

did you check the sim on another phone with band 40 support ?

Airtel Mumbai is band 40 (2300Mhz TDD LTE). As per Airtel executive, they have plans to roll out FDD in Mumbai, but no dates yet.

^^ Yes LTE not working on other compatible sim

Maybe the area you are in is not having any LTE enabled tower in the vicinity, so your phone is showing 3G only.

In Delhi, where I live, I get no Airtel 3G signal in my home. Around 400 meters from my home, on the road, I get 3G signal with full bars.

^^ Did that. My phone shows 4G when his 4G enabled sim is put in it. His phone does not connect to 4G when I put my Airtel 4G sim in it.

Clearly it is issue of 4G service not enabled on my sim. But Airtel refuses to acknowledge. They say that "Saar, aapke number pe 4G activated hai." End of topic. Then they yap about my phone being faulty and blame Apple for falsely advertising 5S being compatible with Band 4 LTE of Airtel 4G.

Nothing makes sense. 4 Customer care persons have said the same thing about Airtel 4G being deployed on Band 4 in Mumbai.

Get the SIM replaced by paying Rs 25 or so SIM replacement fee that they charge to replace faulty SIM. If problem is due to SIM then it will be resolved. If problem is in Airtel's system where they might not have enabled 4G for your number, then you are bhagwan bharose.
